Part 1: Consultation

Bring photos!
a picture is worth a thousand words- so come armed!
Bring a few photos of your inspiration, and make sure they are all similar.

as a stylist, it can be difficult when you bring 4 pictures that are all very different, and you’re not sure what you want!

Your stylist will likely break down your inspiration photos into three sections: the roots, the mids, and the ends. Here are some things to consider, and some of the questions they may ask you!

Your stylist will likely break down your inspiration photos into three sections: the roots, the mids, and the ends. Here are some things to consider, and some of the questions they may ask you!

  • Do you want the color to come come all the way to the roots? Or left natural?

  • Is there dimension through the mids? Are you wanting dimension?

  • Do you want that dimension to continue all the way to the ends, or are you wanting all the ends completely “solid” looking in one color or lightness?

It’s also great to mention things you DONT like, so your stylist can know what to steer away from

For example:(using above photo)

I like how blended the highlights are, and that it’s subtle, but I DON’T like the color of them. I’d like them a bit lighter and coolor.

Part 2:

makingchanges

If you like your stylist, and enjoy the quality of their work, it’s important to let them know when you feel like you want a small change.

If you like your stylist, and enjoy the quality of their work, it’s important to let them know when you feel like you want a small change.

As hairstylists, we take our work very seriously and do everything we can to get the best outcome. But it does take time, and sometimes small changes to get it just right.

don’t be afraid to tell your stylist if something isn’t quite right for you.

for example:

“hey Taylor, I really liked the amount of highlights you gave me, I’m loving the dimension! BUT is there any way we could make the blonde warmer? I feel a little washed out”

ASK QUESTIONS!
sometimes there’s a reason we did/didn’t do something to your hair!

“hey Taylor, my blonde still feels a little yellow, is there a reason for that? What are our options to change it?”

I can speak for myself and majority of hairstylists when I say, in most cases we are HAPPY to make changes and explain things to you. We would rather have a quick chat and make a change than lose your friendship and business!
so don’t be afraid to talk it out.

Part 3: communication

Ultimately, the best way to have great hair, and a great relationship with your stylist is through open communication.

be kind, but be upfront!

do you have a tender head? Mention it to them at the beginning of your appointment, so they can take special care!

Feel like they are missing the mark?
tell them you love supporting them and you want to find a solution to get closer to your hair goals.

and again: ASK ASK ASK!
your stylist is a wealth of knowledge, and chances are, they are just waiting to share it with you!

curious about what “lived in blonde” means?
want to know how to say BALAYAGE?
ask away!

I hope this was helpful to you, as a client or even a stylist! We all want to be on the same page, and this is how I navigate it best. Let me know if you liked these tips!
