A How To
For Braids + Hairstyles
If you’ve followed me on Instagram for a while, you know I LOVE to create hairstyles, and got started braiding hair.
Of all the styles I create, there’s ONE technique that is often the foundation of many hairstyles. It’s simple, easy to do, and your mom probably did it on you when you were a young girl!
This technique can be used alone, or in combination to create SO MANY looks! It’s called:
The Topsy Tail
Learn how to do it, + create this braid! Follow along below!
Gather your tools:
a few bobby pins
some small elastics
a comb
UNITE Second Day Cream
a Halo Hair extension if you have one!
Start by taking Unite Second Day cream (click to shop) and putting a little on your fingers to keep your sections smooth and frizz free..
Take hair from both sides of the crown section and secure with an elastic
Part your fingers through the middle of the hair right above the elastic to create an opening or hole.
Using your thumbs, flip the tail of the pony up and over, pushing it through the hole you created in the last step.
You created a Topsy Tail! Now gently pull on the sides of each twist to “fluff” it and make it bigger.
This technique,
Can be the foundation to so many styles!
You could twist the rest of your hair into a bun for a cute up style
you can do this at the crown before a ponytail for volume
you could do this starting on the side of your head to create a half up-half down braid
The options are endless!
I’m going to show you how to create a big voluminous braid!
Now that you’ve completed the first Topsy Tail, take some hair from both sides and create another Topsy tail. You want it to sit on top of, or as close to your previous elastic.
Continue your Topsy tail process from the previous steps, in multiple sections going down the hair
Don’t forget to stretch, pull, and “fluff” the Topsy Tail twists as you go to make it bigger, and mimic a braid look!
You can continue this method all the way down, or you can switch to a pull through technique for more visual interest. (Basically the same thing, except you don’t flip it through the hole. Just elastic it together then stretch it out.)
Voila,
Perfect Braid
There you have it!
An amazing style, using a simple technique. Your hair will look like a million bucks, and Everyone will marvel at your skills!
I’d love to see you get creative and try other ways to use this technique! Find more examples of this technique below!
